Don't Settle for Good When God Has Great
Monday
'The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. Finding Philip, he said to him, "Follow me." Philip, like Andrew and Peter, was from the town of Bethsaida. Philip found Nathanael and told him, "We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph." "Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?" Nathanael asked. "Come and see," said Philip. When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, he said of him, "Here truly is an Israelite in whom there is no deceit." "How do you know me?" Nathanael asked. Jesus answered, "I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you." Then Nathanael declared, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the king of Israel." Jesus said, "You believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You will see greater things than these."' - John 1:43-51
Have you ever found yourself content with 'good enough'? Maybe it's a job that pays the bills but doesn't fulfill your purpose, or a relationship that's comfortable but lacks depth. We often settle for what's familiar and safe, missing out on what God truly has in store for us.
Nathanael almost made this mistake. When Philip told him about Jesus, Nathanael's first response was skepticism: 'Can anything good come from Nazareth?' His past experiences and preconceptions nearly caused him to miss the greatest encounter of his life. How often do we do the same thing? We limit God's possibilities based on our limited understanding.
God doesn't want us to settle for mediocrity. He has plans that exceed our wildest dreams - plans that require us to step beyond our comfort zones and trust His vision over our own. The 'good' life might feel safe, but it pales in comparison to the 'great' life God has designed for each of us.
Today, consider where you might be settling. Are there dreams you've abandoned because they seemed impossible? Relationships you've given up on? Callings you've ignored because they felt too big? God sees potential where we see problems. He sees purpose where we see obstacles.
The invitation is simple: don't settle for just the good when God has prepared something great. Your breakthrough might be just one step of faith away from where you are right now.
Don't settle for just the good. Settle for what God has for you, which is the best.
Reflect: What 'good enough' situation in your life might God be calling you to move beyond in order to experience His 'great' plans for you?
Prayer: Lord, help me not to settle for mediocrity when You have prepared greatness for my life. Give me the courage to step beyond my comfort zone and trust Your vision over my own limited understanding. Show me where I've been settling and give me faith to pursue Your best. Amen.
