Lukewarm Christian

Have you ever taken a sip of lukewarm coffee that was meant to be hot? That disappointing sensation perfectly illustrates how God feels about half-hearted faith. In the ancient city of Laodicea, residents understood this metaphor deeply. Their city had no natural water source, so they imported hot water with healing properties from one neighboring city and refreshing cold water from another. By the time either reached Laodicea, both became lukewarm and unpleasant.

This is precisely why Jesus used this powerful imagery when addressing the Laodicean church. He wasn't simply contrasting passionate faith with opposition—He was highlighting how both hot and cold water served valuable purposes, while lukewarm water was useless.

Many of us have fallen into comfortable Christianity—having enough Jesus to feel better but not enough to be transformed. We attend church occasionally, pray when convenient, and maintain a spiritual identity that demands little sacrifice. But this lukewarm approach to faith is not just disappointing to God—it's intolerable.

God desires authenticity in our relationship with Him. He would rather we be refreshingly cold (honestly seeking) or healing hot (fully committed) than existing in a tepid middle ground that serves no purpose. Today, consider whether your faith is making any spiritual impact. Are you hot, cold, or caught in the lukewarm middle?
