Ordinary Lives, Extraordinary Invitations
Monday
'And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night.' - Luke 2:8
Have you ever felt like you're just going through the motions of life? The shepherds in Luke's Gospel were doing exactly that - working the night shift, watching sheep, living what many would consider an unremarkable existence. Yet it was to these ordinary workers that God chose to announce the most extraordinary news in human history.
God has a beautiful way of interrupting our routine with His presence. While the religious leaders slept in their comfortable beds, while the wealthy conducted their important business, God appeared to humble shepherds in a field. This wasn't an accident or oversight - it was intentional. God delights in choosing ordinary people for extraordinary moments.
Perhaps you feel overlooked or insignificant today. Maybe you're wondering if God could ever use someone like you. The shepherds' story reminds us that God doesn't call the qualified; He qualifies the called. Your ordinary life is the perfect canvas for God's extraordinary work. He sees potential where others see mundane. He sees purpose where others see routine.
The beauty of this story is that the shepherds weren't doing anything particularly spiritual when God showed up. They were simply faithful in their daily responsibilities. Sometimes we think we need to be in a church building or engaged in 'religious' activities for God to speak to us. But God meets us right where we are - in our workplaces, homes, and everyday moments.
Your life may feel ordinary, but you serve an extraordinary God who specializes in using ordinary people to accomplish His purposes. Stay faithful in the small things, because you never know when God might interrupt your routine with a divine invitation.
He could have went to the scribes, he could have went to the, to the priests. He could have went, he could have went to all these other people who seem to be doing significant things. But instead he decided to declare the big news to somebody who was living an insignificant, what seemed like life at the moment.
Reflect: In what areas of your 'ordinary' life might God be preparing to do something extraordinary?
Prayer: Lord, help me to see that my ordinary life is valuable to You. Open my eyes to recognize Your presence in my daily routine, and prepare my heart to receive whatever invitation You have for me. Thank You for choosing ordinary people like me for Your extraordinary purposes. Amen.
